From Steve's Desk:Memo

July already!!! Where has the year gone? It does not seem like we have had much summer with the cool wet weather but everything is green and growing, including the weeds. This month brings the fair, our Master Gardener summer garden tour, and some of us will squeeze in some time for vacation and getting kids ready to go off to college. Don’t forget, the Summer Sizzle, August 9th, will be on us before we know it.

Thanks to all of you, particularly the class of 2008, who have staffed the Home, Yard, and Garden Line this past month and who have signed up for July. We have clients in almost every day so your help is vital and much appreciated. The year has gone by so quickly. As I have been checking over the volunteer hour sheets in your folders, I notice that some of you still need to meet your 10 hours of volunteer time and 6 hours of CEUs to maintain your status as Certified Master Gardeners. I also notice that a few of the Interns are in need of volunteer hours to complete their requirements to become Certified. All of this must be done by October 31, 2008. There are numerous volunteer opportunities, including the HYG line, as well as programs to meet your CEU requirements, so I do not expect any last minute panic request, so, if you have extenuating circumstances, please talk to me.

At their July meeting, The Master Gardener Advisory Committee approved and Emeriti status for the Master Gardeners in Trumbull County. To be considered for Emeriti status you must meet the following requirements:

A certified Master Gardener who has been actively involved and contributed in a positive way to the OSU Extension Master Gardener Program in Trumbull County, and who has demonstrated the willingness to support the goals, vision, mission and values of the OSU Extension Master Gardener Program in Trumbull County, may be considered for Emeriti status when due to personal circumstances they can no longer meet the yearly requirement to maintain certification. Emeriti status will entitle those selected to participate in all Master Gardener Activities.

Individuals must be recommended by a certified Master Gardener and approved by the Master Gardener Advisory Committee. Emeriti status will be granted during the Graduation and Recognition program.

Plans for the 2008 State Master Gardener Conference are progressing very nicely. The program has been set, speakers confirmed, and the Friday tours are all in place. Additionally, the vendor committee has eleven businesses confirmed and is working to fill the other nine booths. Registration materials will be available on line and in hard copy by August 1st. You will have an opportunity at the July meeting to sign up to assist with one of the many task or committees needed to make the conference a success. Anyone assisting with the conference will receive a discount on the registration fees.

SUMMER GARDEN TOUR- JULY 24TH

Our Summer Garden tours have been such a success, that I decided to continue it again this year. Plan on joining us on Thursday, July 24th. We will begin our tour at Carol and Bill Harrison’s home in Cortland at 9:30 am. From there, we will travel to Champion to Carol Knock’s arboretum of perennials and outstanding landscape features. Leaving Carol’s we will travel Nelson Peterson’s home off of Parkman Road to view his vegetable garden, nibble on the produce when Nelson is not watching, and enjoy a brown bag lunch around the garden shed. Nelson might even let us dig bulbs some daffodil bulbs. From Nelson’s we will travel to Newton Falls to visit the gardens of Rosemarie and Ron Scrabis, winners of the 2007 Tribune Garden Contest, where we will see how he has incorporated his model trains into the landscape design with plants. We will plan to leave the Extension office about 9:15 if you want to car pool from here.
