About the Master Gardener Program

The Master Gardener Program began in Ohio nearly 20 years ago with programs in Cuyahoga and Franklin Counties. Today 78 counties in Ohio have Master Gardener programs. The program in Trumbull County began in 1997.

Each Master Gardener program operates a bit differently in every county but follows the state guidelines. The purpose of the Master Gardener program is to provide training to volunteers who in turn assist The Ohio State University Extension in providing consumer horticulture information and educational programs and services to the public. There is a strong partnership between the Master Gardener volunteers and the Ohio State University. You will have an opportunity to become actively involved in many exciting projects with the Master Gardeners. One of the primary responsibilities is to assist with home horticultural questions from clientele who request assistance either by coming to the office or calling on the phone. Other educational opportunities will include community outreach programs or projects and presentations to garden or other civic organizations. These are many and varied and provide valuable exposure for the program and you as Master Gardeners.

The success of every Master Gardener program depends on three main points: 1) The opportunity to learn, 2) the opportunity to share that knowledge and 3) the opportunity to socialize.

We hope that you will consider joining our Master Gardeners, and share your enthusiasm and knowledge with fellow gardeners.
